4/13/25 News and Notes

13 Apr by Chad Kelchen

Our first meet for the competition season is now in the books. This meet was set up in Feb and originally set for 50 targets, primarily because is a crap shoot on weather that far out. Ideally we ramp up to 100 target events to better prepare the team for state. As I noted what I cant prevent is weather. The event was set for 100 targets a week ago based on a forecast. Then Ikes weather strikes again. I know some individuals pulled from the competition because the scores wouldn’t be high enough – IE quit because the weather is not good enough to shoot well in. This attitude doesn’t really help much for development or to build off of. I don’t know of any other competition where this is acceptable. I’m terrible at giving praise – but I’m proud of this team, You stuck it out in bad conditions and made the best of the situation. Results are posted here: https://app.sssfonline.com/results Check SCTP, type in Ankeny Hawks and navigate to the competition date. The link isn’t the easiest to navigate, but it’s the same for all events. Short of it: Austin Nordstrud – 2nd place men’s varsity singles, Morgan Ray, 3rd place women’s varsity singles, Hugo Villagas, 3rd men’s intermediate singles. Handicap: Ethan Skow, 3rd place men’s varsity, Morgan Ray 1st place women’s varsity handicap, Ivy Tamminga, 2nd place women’s varsity, Rowyn Hill 2nd place JV men’s handicap. Doubles: Mason Moore 2nd, men’s varsity, Austin Nordstrud 3rd men’s varsity (this went reverse run, then forward run to decide a tie with Ethan Skow), Ivy Tamminga 2nd place varsity doubles, Morgan Ray, 3rd place varsity doubles, and Griffen Vierling, 3rd Place JV doubles. Last but not least, thank you to everyone who worked/donated to the concession stand. This netted the team $800.
This week we need line servers for Hy Vee Steak Night: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B084DABA623A6FE3-56142186-april#/ This has been a great partnership, but we need people to show up. It is skeet night, we will need other athletes/parents to show up. The rest of the team needs to invite as many people as they can to show up for a $10 steak Dinner.
Take a ticket Tuesday.
Clay Crushers 300 target event for Saturday will close on Tuesday 4/15,
Jags 4/19 Mesozoic meet will close on 4/19 this is a 50 target per disciple meet. I encourage fall and spring athletes to sign up for singles and handicap.
State Meet is open, I encourage as many people as possible to sign up for this ticket. I may run a squad on Friday of the meet singles = please put a note in the comments box if this is preferable. This ticket closes 4/22.
This week I have also posted SCTP Regionals meet at Stockdale. Again, I encourage as many as possible to sign up for this. Stockdale is near Iowa Falls, this meet will take most of the day to shoot, 100 targets in singles, doubles and handicap.
Practices continue in the new format for Monday, where around 7-30 we will take 2-3 houses and do drills, again Ill pick something different each week with a focus point on fundamentals. Feet, Mount, See, Move, Shoot. At the beginning of the season, I promised a shoot off for high nightly scores – but no one’s sticking around for it. If there’s interest we can intensify those efforts. One on One instruction is also available and is a priority. If you are interested, just let the ops table know. Its hard to move a team of this size around for practice, so the only thing I can’t guarantee is a specific time. Drills and One on Ones are intended for athletes to improve – but you need to meet me part way by committing the time to take advantage of it.
